This year’s Longest Dinner Table was a huge success - thanks to your help! Whether you were doing heavy lifting, carefully laying out decorations, hustling to sell raffle tickets, or organizing supplies at the end of the night, your impact was invaluable. All the money raised will go towards supporting our new building project, The Atrium, to support Tahoe’s youth, strengthen food access, and expand all our programs.

A special shoutout to Edgewood Tahoe Resort for sending 12 volunteers to help during the event. We are so happy to partner with you and so glad you had fun! Also thanks to our long-time Marcella Foundation volunteers who returned for a second year to help us sell raffle tickets. You’re the best!

There were 133 tables and 798 chairs set up in one large rectangle, all thanks to the South Tahoe High School Football Team. Your helping hands made the long table come to life— spanning three blocks — which is no easy thing to do. Then the players who disassembled the tables, you helped our crew pack every table into the truck in just 13 minutes!

This is such a beloved community event that has grown for 6 years, and we needed lots of help to make it grow again in 2026. You made it possible for 800 members of our community to enjoy a potluck, costume content, and a true party with a purpose. Our team from The Longest Table and the Marcella Foundation could not be more grateful for your support, time, and energy. Plus, we hope you had fun too — there will be more tables next year, and we’d love to have you join again!

When we launched the Marcella Foundation our goal was simple: listen deeply, dream boldly, and take action. As someone born and raised in South Lake Tahoe, I know this place is both extraordinary and challenging. Tahoe is a community of paradoxes. World-renowned recreation is steps away, yet a drive on a holiday weekend can feel impossible. Leading scientists study our lake, yet access to educational opportunities can feel limited. Celebrity chefs and luxury dining draw visitors, yet 18% of local families face food insecurity every day. We have access to so much, and at the same time, so little.

That tension is exactly why we exist. For the past three years, the Marcella Foundation has worked alongside students, families, schools, and partners to support young people through food access, literacy, and mentorship. We’ve seen what happens when basic needs are met, when a child has a book in their hands, when a student has someone who believes in them. And we’ve also felt the ceiling of what’s possible without a dedicated space to bring it all together.

The Atrium is the next evolution of our work. It is not a standalone project or a new direction. It is a place that allows our existing impact to grow.

Located at 970 Lodi Avenue (the old Attic building!), The Atrium transforms a former thrift store into a community hub. It brings together youth leadership, hands-on learning, food access, and literacy under one roof.

At its core, The Atrium is a makerspace developed in partnership with South Tahoe High School. It is a place where high school students can explore making, design, fabrication, and entrepreneurship through real tools and real experiences. It is free, accessible, and intentionally designed for all students—not just the ones who already see themselves as “makers” or “high achievers.”

This is learning by doing. Trying something new. Building confidence through creation. Discovering what’s possible when students are given both tools and trust.

But The Atrium is more than a makerspace.

It strengthens the local food system by expanding refrigeration, storage, and coordination for food rescue and redistribution. It expands literacy by supporting book access and reading mentorship for younger children. And it creates a visible, welcoming place where students, families, volunteers, and partners can come together.

High school students are asking for more hands-on learning and clearer pathways between school, college, careers, and community. Teachers are looking for partners who enhance what’s already happening in the classroom. Food partners are stretched by limited capacity, even as good food goes to waste. Families are navigating rising costs, limited access, and uncertainty about what comes next for their kids.

We are in active partnership with South Tahoe High School. We are engaging workforce partners and funders who see the value of experiential learning. We are hearing from volunteers and community members who want to do more - but need a place to plug in. And we are learning, again and again, that siloed solutions are not enough.

This moment matters because we have the opportunity to build systems, not just programs. To reduce duplication and increase capacity. To create a space that is flexible, responsive, and rooted in the real needs of our community.

The Atrium is both a place and a promise. A promise that Tahoe’s young people deserve access, opportunity, and trust. A promise that when we invest in the whole student, the entire community benefits.

Let’s review what happened in 2025—because it was an incredible year for the Marcella Foundation. Thanks to our amazing community, we delivered 71,947 pounds of food through FeedTahoe, shared 30,621 books through the Imagination Library, gifted 67 Kindles, activated 272 volunteers, partnered with 25 new food donors, awarded 10 scholarships, hosted five community events, and earned a Blue Ribbon Award. We also grew our Marcella team and expanded the reach of our core programs—ReadingPals, the Fannan Fellowship, FeedTahoe, and our community events. None of this would have been possible without the people who showed up, gave back, and believed in this mission. Here are some of our favorite highlights of 2025.

We achieved so many accomplishments this year, and every single one was made possible by the generosity of our supporters, volunteers, and partners.

This year, we were excited to welcome two amazing new full-time team members! Lily Summerville joined us as our FeedTahoe Coordinator and did an incredible job bringing our FeedTahoe one-year anniversary and Holiday Food Drive to life. Joseph Minnich relocated from Cleveland, Ohio to help launch South Lake Tahoe’s first community makerspace, with Joseph serving as our Entrepreneurship Lab Coordinator. We’re excited to share that in 2025, our ReadingPals volunteer team grew to 44 amazing members, and we expanded our ReadingPals program to South Lake Tahoe High School volunteers—bringing even more books, support, and joy to young readers in our community. We can’t wait to see how this program will continue to grow in 2026!

BookMode program hosted a successful Kindle Giveaway at Sierra House Elementary School for second-grade students. Thanks to the hard work of volunteers and community partners, 70 students were given their very own Kindles, opening up new opportunities for reading and learning.

Through the Fannan Fellowship, we were proud to award 10 scholarships to South Lake Tahoe High School students, supporting the next generation of Tahoe leaders. This year’s recipients stood out for their authenticity, leadership, and passion for change. In 2025, we celebrated one year of FeedTahoe and what an incredible year it was. We completed over 700 food rescues, hosted a Holiday Food Drive, and created care packages for the firefighters who bravely fought the wildfires in Southern California.

We also led and supported community-wide initiatives, including our Holiday Food Drive and our Second Turkey Drop with Kings Meats, providing 500 turkeys to families during the holidays. Through partnerships with some of the most generous local businesses, we rescued and delivered 71,947 pounds of food to families across Tahoe—food that otherwise would have ended up in the landfill.

We were honored to receive the Blue Ribbon Award for Community Enrichment from the Tahoe Chamber, recognizing the impact of our programs and the strength of our community partnerships.

Our Mother’s Day “Catch For A Cause” Seafood Event was nothing short of amazing — and it's all thanks to YOU! Thank you everyone for participating! We were sold out a week before the event!

the magic of The Longest Table 2025—a night that brought our South Lake Tahoe community together for connection, celebration, and a powerful cause. Thanks to your incredible generosity and energy, we raised over $20,000 in support of the South Lake Tahoe Family Resource Center (@slt_familyresource)—and we threw one unforgettable dance party while we were at it!

Our largest volunteer turnout of the year was at the American Golf Champion Tournament, where our community showed up in an incredible way to support our mission.

The Holiday Food Drive was a beautiful success, made possible by the incredible generosity of our community and the local businesses that opened their doors to host donation bins. Your kindness allowed us to extend the drive by an extra two weeks and reach even more families in need.

We were also honored to take part in our annual Second Turkey Drop with Kings Meats, helping provide 500 turkeys to families throughout our community. It was a truly meaningful way to wrap up 2025 and celebrate what we can accomplish together.

As we look back at 2025, we are filled with deep gratitude for everyone who made this year possible. Guided by our pillars — FEED, READ, and LEAD— and inspired by our message to THINK BIG and MAKE a DIFFERENCE, we truly created meaningful impact across our community.

From families packing meal kits together at the kitchen table, to kids proudly carrying canned goods into school drop-offs, to friends stopping by donation bins on their coffee runs — this year’s Holiday Food Drive has been filled with joy, teamwork, and the kind of magic you only find when a community truly comes together.

Because of the incredible response, we’ve extended the Holiday Food Drive through December 12!

This year has blown us away. We’ve seen more donations, more volunteers, and more kindness than ever before. What started as a simple idea turned into an incredible movement powered by neighbors, businesses, and families who wanted to make the holidays brighter for others.

Our volunteers have been hustling — sorting donations, organizing food, and getting everything where it needs to go. It’s been busy (in the best way possible!), and we wouldn’t change a thing.

This drive has reminded us that giving doesn’t have to be complicated — it just has to come from the heart.

We were honored to help organize the 2nd Annual Turkey Drop with Kings Meats, delivering 500 turkeys to organizations serving families across our community — just in time for the holidays.

Huge thank you to the California Conservation Corps for handling the heavy lifting and to every partner, volunteer, and business who made this possible. This was a true reminder of what happens when a community shows up together.

We’re thrilled to share that ReadingPals is returning for the 2025–2026 school year — bigger, brighter, and bolder than before.

Last spring, we launched ReadingPals at Tahoe Valley Elementary as a pilot program. The idea was simple: pair caring adults with students for one-on-one reading time each week. Sixteen volunteers showed up with open hearts and a love of books — and magic happened.

Students grew more confident. Teachers saw kids light up when it was time to read. Volunteers built meaningful relationships that turned a single hour a week into something kids looked forward to all year long. We didn’t just see improved literacy skills — we saw smiles, excitement, and kids who believed in themselves.

Because of that incredible impact, we’re now massively growing ReadingPals. More schools are coming on board. More volunteers will be matched with students. More children will have a steady, trusted adult to read with every week. This isn’t just an expansion — it’s a movement to make reading joyful, consistent, and life-changing for even more kids in our community.

Summer at the Marcella Foundation has been nothing short of amazing! We were honored to receive the Community Enrichment Award from the Tahoe Chamber, wrapped up another rewarding season of Reading Pals, and had the joy of joining the incredible Longest Table event. On top of all that, we celebrated a major milestone—our 500th food rescue with FeedTahoe! It’s been a season full of community, connection, and meaningful impact.

We’re thrilled to announce that the Tahoe Chamber has honored us with the Blue Ribbon Award for Community Enrichment—an incredible recognition of the work our team and community make possible.

Our Reading Pals pilot program at Tahoe Valley Elementary was a wonderful success! Each week, 16 dedicated volunteers brought confidence, connection, and a love of reading to local students, making a meaningful impact that will last far beyond the classroom.

A huge thank you to our 44+ volunteers and the South Tahoe High School football team for giving more than 230 hours of their time! Their dedication helped us raise over $20,000 for the Family Resource Center of South Lake Tahoe, providing vital support to local families and making a real difference in our community. We’re so inspired by this year’s impact that we’re already planning for next year!

We were pumped to run a concession booth at the 2025 American Century Championship, turning every bite into support for our programs! With the help of 85+ amazing volunteers and our newest Food Rescue Heroes, we served event attendees while rescuing 40 trays of prepared food for local nonprofits—proving that good food can do even more good.

Still Sweaty, Still Smiling: What Serving at ACC Meant to Us

We’re still riding the high from this past weekend at the American Century Championship—and honestly? We’re not ready to come down yet.

Somehow, we ended up right in the middle of one of the biggest golf tournaments in the country. Celebrities were everywhere, cameras were rolling, and in the middle of all that chaos? Our people were showing up—with aprons, walkie-talkies, sunscreen, and smiles.

The Marcella Foundation was asked to help provide food service for the tournament, and instead of wondering how we’d pull it off, over 85 volunteers from our programs said, “I’m in.” And they meant it.

We had Imagination Library parents, Barton Hospital employees, FeedTahoe and ReadingPals volunteers, Fannan Fellows, and dozens of other community members stepping into roles—prepping, serving, and doing whatever needed to get done. No drama, no spotlight, just heart.

Was it hot? Absolutely.
Were we tired? For sure.
Would we do it again? In a heartbeat.

Because here’s the thing: this community shows up. Always has.

While the tournament was packed with big names, the real magic was behind the scenes—where our volunteers kept things moving with patience, grit, and pride. And through it all, you could feel it: Tahoe pride.

To everyone who stopped by our booth to learn more about what we do—thank you. You reminded us why this work matters. You reminded us that we’re not alone.

This weekend wasn’t just about food service.
It was about momentum, connection, and what happens when people say yes to something bigger than themselves.

ReadingPals Pilot Wrap-Up: A Story of Community, Commitment, and Connection

This spring, the Marcella Foundation proudly launched our ReadingPals pilot program at Tahoe Valley Elementary School—and what an inspiring start it’s been! Sixteen amazing volunteers stepped up to spend one-on-one time each week with local students, helping them build confidence, strengthen their literacy skills, and—most importantly—fall in love with reading.

From the moment we began volunteer training, we could feel the energy and heart behind this program. These caring adults came ready to show up for kids in the most impactful way—by simply sitting down, opening a book, and being present. And the results? More smiles. More confidence. More students excited to turn the page.

It Takes a Village

The launch of ReadingPals wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible support of our South Lake Tahoe community.

• A huge thank you to the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, who made sure every volunteer was fingerprinted in just one day. Their friendly service and quick action ensured our ReadingPals could get to work with students right away—safely and smoothly.
• Another heartfelt shout-out to Big Daddy’s Burgers, who generously sponsored lunch for the entire police department during the fingerprinting process. Your thoughtfulness fueled the effort (and a few smiles)!

These kinds of partnerships are the heartbeat of what we do. When community members, businesses, and volunteers come together, the result is real change—right where it matters most: in the lives of our children.

The success of ReadingPals is reflected in the joyful faces and growing confidence of the students who participated. Teachers noticed the difference, and students looked forward to their reading sessions each week. With the consistent support of a trusted adult, many students took meaningful steps forward in both their reading ability and self-esteem.

We are so proud of what this pilot has already accomplished, and it’s all thanks to our dedicated volunteers who gave their time, energy, and heart to each session. Your one-on-one commitment made a lasting impact.

We’re thrilled to introduce the newest member of the Marcella Foundation team: Lily Summerville, our passionate and driven FeedTahoe Coordinator!

Lily brings with her a powerful mix of environmental expertise and grassroots community experience. A proud UC Davis graduate, Lily went on to serve nearly two years as a California Climate Action Corps fellow with AmeriCorps. During her fellowship, she partnered closely with the City of South Lake Tahoe and South Tahoe Refuse, leading efforts in food waste diversion, composting, school-based environmental education, and hands-on sustainability initiatives across the community.

What sets Lily apart is her heart for people and place. She’s deeply committed to community-led change and is excited to bring that same energy to FeedTahoe—working to expand food access and foster local resilience throughout the Tahoe region.

When she’s not making big change happen, you’ll find Lily soaking up the great outdoors—skiing, hiking, running, paddle boarding, and loving every bit of life in Tahoe. She’s proud to call this beautiful place home and even prouder to serve the incredible community that makes it so special.

We are so excited to have her as part of the Marcella Foundation and all that she will and already has contributed to this community! We cannot wait to show you the difference she will bring to not only the FeedTahoe program but to the community of South Lake Tahoe. Come meet her this Friday!
